Peruvudiyar temple is also called as Brihadeeswarar temple and rajarajaeswaram . This is a hindu temple dedicated to shiva located in south bank in kaveri river in thanjavur . Peruvudiyar temple is build by Raja raja chola in the year of 1010 CE . This temple is popularly known as Big Temple . It turned 1000 years old in september 2010 . Big temple is one of the largest south Indian temples and an ideal example of fully realized dravidian architecture . The peruvudiyar temple is the world's first complete granite construction temple . They use 1,30,000 tons of granite to built the whole temple . This temple is combination of tamil and architecture . The name of Peruvudiyar temple's meaning is peru means - big and vudiyar means adavar - it's refer shivan ( cosmic dancer) . The temple has big shivan so its called as peruvudiyar temple .

Height of the lingam is 12 feet which is equivalent to vowels-uyir ezthuthukkal (உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள்) in tamil .

Height of the linga pedestel is 18 feet which is equivalent to consonant in tamil - mei ezhuthukkal ( மெய்யெழுத்துகள்) .

Height of the tower is 216 feet and is equivalent to total number of consonant vowels-uyirmei ezhuthukkal of tamil (உயிர்மெய் எழுத்துக்கள்) .

Distance between shivan and nandhi is 247 feet which is equivalent to total numbers of letter in tamil (12+18+216+1)=247 . Rajaraja cholan unite tamil and shiva to maintain the pride of tamil . We know from this rajaraja chola and people who lived during his reign at the time would have the patron saint of tamil . This temple takes 30-years to complete the construction work . Big temple is also called as engineering marvelous .

Method of lifting stones through the ramp is used to elevate the 80 tons granite to 216 feet . It takes 5 years to placed a stone to be lifted will be shift to the plane area of near the ramp by using traditional old technology used by khalaasi team .

Khalasi is the name of trained team of people with traditional equipment link winch made of heavy wooden pieces . Every king maintained this well build team for loading and unloading work of heavy material without any accident . This khalasi are played a key role in all construction activities of that era . 5000 elephant also used lifting a 80 tons granite stone . In this gopuram more than 10 staircase are constructed but we can able to see only eight staircase . Other staircases are consider as mysteries behind . Cement and other binding materials are not used to construct a big temple . This temple construction is based on gravitational pull and interlocking methods . It's not shake even now a days .

During this time a temple was build to homepage to lord shiva . Big temple is also called as architecture marvel and one of the most visited tourist attraction in Tamil Nadu . The temple was decleared as the world heritage site by UNESCO . Peruvudiyar temple referred as the great living of cholas . Another intresting fact about it's architecture is that the vimana ( tower above the sanctum sanctorum ) of the temple does not case a shadow at noon!!!

This is the only thing that should surprise us , all those who worked to build the temple the workers name should mention in an inscription , it is still there . The one thing catches the everyone's attention there is no source of granite around 60 kilometers . The foundation of the large temple is just 5 feet . It's really amazed . The king and the people who worked hard to keep our tamilans pride. They placed the portrait of foreign people inscribed like chinnes and other countries people face . This is not something we can be proud of we should all be ashamed of this . His real name is Arulmozhi varma as he conquered the states of pandya, chera and part of sri lanaka , people started calling him as mumudi cholan that came as Rajaraja cholan(king among king) . so, people are called as Rajaraja cholan .
